An End of Life Doula, also known as a Death Doula, offers non-medical, holistic support to individuals and families as they navigate the emotional, spiritual, and practical aspects of dying. They help honor the end of life as a meaningful, transformative experience.

8 Week Curriculum

 

Week 1: Introduction to End of Life Doula Work

  • Overview of the doula’s role and responsibilities

  • The philosophy of death as a sacred transition

  • Emotional intelligence and presence in end-of-life care

  • Understanding the needs of the dying and their families

Week 2: The Process of Dying

  • Exploring the physical, emotional, and spiritual stages of death

  • Medical aspects and terminology doulas should understand

  • Supporting the dying during each phase

  • Case studies on death experiences

Week 3: Holding Sacred Space

  • How to create a calming and supportive environment

  • Sacred rituals and ceremonies for end-of-life transitions

  • Integrating spiritual and religious practices based on the individual’s belief system

  • Using meditation, music, and aromatherapy

Week 4: Emotional & Spiritual Support for Families

  • Understanding grief and loss in the family dynamic

  • Counseling and emotional support techniques for families

  • Helping families prepare for death and say goodbye

  • Facilitating conversations about legacy, life review, and closure

Week 5: Metaphysical Tools for Comfort & Healing

  • Introduction to metaphysical tools like energy healing, crystals, and visualization

  • Reiki and energy work to bring peace and relaxation

  • Guided meditations for the dying and their families

  • Using sound therapy, such as singing bowls, for soothing energy

Week 6: The Ethics & Boundaries of Doula Work

  • Ethical considerations in death doula work

  • Setting boundaries as a doula

  • Legal aspects: advance directives, DNRs, wills, and power of attorney

  • Working alongside medical professionals

Week 7: Grief, Bereavement, and After-Death Support

  • Understanding grief stages and how to support the bereaved

  • Continuing support for families after death (memorials, grief counseling)

  • Creating a resource list for clients (grief counselors, support groups)

  • Self-care for the doula: Managing vicarious trauma and burnout

Week 8: Becoming a Professional End of Life Doula

  • Steps to setting up your doula practice

  • Marketing your services and finding clients

  • Building relationships with hospices, hospitals, and caregivers

  • Certification, continuing education, and professional networks
