Can Creativity Determine Your Fertility?

The Role of Creative Energy in Enhancing Reproductive Health

Pregnant woman laying down

It’s no secret that hundreds of thousands of women are struggling to become pregnant each year. With the latest advances in reproductive medicine including in vitro fertilization and surrogacy, couples have more options available to them now than ever before. 1 in 6 people experience infertility.

Our ability to create may inextricably be linked to our ability to become pregnant and our creative genius. I first made this connection while reading, “The Artist’s Way” by Julia Cameron. It made me realize and understand the connection between us and our higher power, the Source, and creativity. As a birth coach, I have worked with a lot of pregnant women and those who desire to become pregnant. There are a number of ways that women experience infertility. I had my son at 21 but struggled with infertility after having him. We tried for another baby for 3 years and failed. I had an ectopic pregnancy in 2017 which required emergency surgery and the removal of a fallopian tube, in addition to trying for 4 years to become pregnant by my ex husband.

After the divorce, I began reading The Artist’s Way to reconnect with myself again. I learned to view myself as an artist because I am the creator of works - blogs, books, programs, projects, etc. I have an entire body of work created, developed and implemented by me. It opened my mind up to what it meant to be an artist and how practicing your art everyday allows us to step back into our creativity.

Years prior, I attended a workshop where we discussed what is called the NASA study which measured the creative genius of people aged 4 to 20. It reports that we operate at 98% of our creative genius from ages 4 to 5, and by the time we are 20, we’re operating at just 2%. Long story short: as children, we have less inhibitions or worries, and as such have more freedom to try new things, regardless if we fail at them or not. We start being conditioned by age 5, going into Kindergarten, on how to be, think, act and do as a human, so by the time we’re adults, we’re more like everyone else, and less like our unique selves. Which, in my opinion, is why our creative genius diminishes each year we age.

This got me thinking about how during those times in my life that I experienced infertility, I also had overpowering feelings of unfulfillment. I was so worried about what was not happening in my life and about all the huge burdens I felt like I had to carry. When we experience these types of feelings, we operate in lower states of our creativity/consciousness, whereas, creative energy is high vibrational, free flowing, worry free and unpredictable. Whatever state your mind is in, is the state of which your body will be in, meaning if you do the inner work to rid your mind and emotions of worries, stress and heavy burdens, then your body will release those things too, opening your uterus up to receive a child.

To enhance your creativity, you need to know what it requires. There is no right or wrong in it, it’s just expression, and that expression requires four things from you:

  1. Time - You need uninterrupted time to just be, and let what flows through you, flow through you. If you’re still looking for your inner artist, no problem. Start with a journal and just begin to write. Don’t think about it too much, just let it flow. This is called ‘Morning Pages’ in “The Artist’s Way”.

  2. Space - You need space in your room, in your house, a studio, a park. You need somewhere to be with yourself. Just you and the Source.

  3. Courage - It takes a certain amount of bravery to try something new or to put yourself out there, even if it’s just for your eyes to see. A child doesn’t judge their own drawings harshly because they are just having fun creating, but as adults, we tend to be much too hard on ourselves for simply trying.

  4. Receivership - Receiver mode is difficult for the constant giver. Many women are recovering from codependency and most don’t know it. Being the go to, and the one who seemingly has it all figured out is exhausting. In order for you to receive a child, you must relax in your feminine energy and learn to be in receivership.

Peace symbol

For many years I suppressed my creativity, my artistry and my feelings. I swallowed a lot, preferring not to say anything to keep the peace, not realizing that meant starting a war within myself. That war affects not just our creativity and our fertility, but our overall health. We’re learning more about the effects of stress and trauma on the mind and body, and how those things contribute to illness. Where creativity is low, stress is high, and that stress affects our menstrual cycles, and therefore, our fertility.

Books like “The Body Keeps The Score”, “When the Body Says No: Exploring The Stress-Disease Connection” or “The Body Bears the Burden: Trauma, Dissociation, and Disease” all speak to the overall negative effects that stress and trauma have on our bodies, including fertility. My work is helping people heal their self-image because the concept of self is most important on your fertility/birth journey. Your fertility depends largely on how you feel about yourself, and what you think about yourself. We work to break down the walls of your stress and trauma, then work to rebuild a positive image of yourself, where you’ll see lots of things in your life improve.

After recognizing the connection between fertility and creativity, I began working to remove the creativity blocks by working through “The Artist’s Way” and exploring those sides of myself that I had long left behind as that 98% creative genius kid. I started writing again, went to the art studio, dropped an affirmation album, worked to release my trauma through several healing modalities, and committed to helping other women unblock their creativity. Within a year, I felt a dramatic shift in my menstrual cycle. My breasts were fuller, my period was more regulated and I felt more fertile, like, it was/is a feeling. I can now tell when I’m ovulating again. I had not experienced much of this since before I became pregnant with my son.
